Looking for an Electrician in Cardiff?

Electrical jobs rarely arrive at a convenient time. A fuse board keeps tripping, a socket stops working, or you have just bought a house and want to know what is behind the walls.

Cardiff has plenty of electricians, but they are not all the same. Some focus on rewiring older houses. Some spend most of their week on landlord safety reports. Others are better suited to lighting, alarms, smart controls or EV chargers.

The city also has a mixed set of homes. There are older terraced streets, newer flats, family houses in the suburbs and a large rented sector, including shared student houses. A good fit for a Victorian terrace in one part of the city may not be the best fit for a new flat in another.

This guide covers 10 electricians and electrical businesses in and around Cardiff that are worth looking into. We used each business's own website where it has one, plus its Which? Trusted Traders profile or Companies House record. We reviewed these pages in October 2026.

This is not an official ranking. We have not tested or hired any of these businesses. It is a starting point for your own comparison, so read recent reviews, confirm they cover your postcode and ask for a written quote.

Two of the ten need extra care, and we say why in their entries. One is based in Newport, and one looks like an appliance shop rather than an electrical contractor.

Our List of 10 Electricians in Cardiff

Here is a quick look at the businesses covered in this guide.

Now let's look at what each business says about itself and the sort of job you might contact it about.

1. MJP Electrical

A larger firm that lists Cardiff among many areas

MJP Electrical is a bigger operation than most on this list. Its website describes a family-run business that has traded for "over 30 years". It lists Bristol, Bath, Gloucestershire and Swindon as service areas, and it also lists Cardiff, Newport, Bridgend and surrounding areas in South Wales.

The Companies House record for MJP Electrical Services Ltd shows an active company, incorporated in March 2020, with a registered office in Warmley, Bristol. So this is not a Cardiff-based business. It may suit you if you like a larger firm, but ask where your engineer will travel from.

The website lists emergency call-outs, landlord and homebuyer EICRs, consumer unit replacements, house rewires and EV charging for homes. It also lists commercial electrical work. It says it is NICEIC approved and that its engineers are 18th Edition qualified and insured. We have not checked the NICEIC register, so do that before you book.

The site publishes prices, which is useful. It says its urgent call-out charge is £171 plus VAT including the first hour, with the standard rate £57 plus VAT an hour. Materials are extra. These are the firm's own figures and may have changed, so confirm the price for your address.

The site claims a 4.9 star rating. It gives two different review counts on different parts of the page, so treat it as the business's own claim and read the reviews yourself.

A good place to start if: You want published rates and a larger firm for an EICR, consumer unit or rewire, and you are happy to confirm that someone can attend your part of Cardiff.

2. Cardiff Electrical Home Rewire Ltd

A local company focused on rewiring

If you are planning a full or partial rewire, it helps to choose a business that does a lot of them. The name of Cardiff Electrical Home Rewire Ltd tells you where its focus is.

The company's website lists full and partial rewires, consumer unit upgrades, EICR inspections, EV charger installation, fault-finding and some commercial work. It names a long list of areas it covers, including Whitchurch, Llandaff, Rhiwbina, Cyncoed, Roath, Canton, Pontcanna, Grangetown and Llanishen, as well as Penarth, Barry, Caerphilly, Pontypridd, Newport and Bridgend.

The Companies House record shows an active private limited company, incorporated on 5 February 2023, with a registered office on Clarbeston Road in Cardiff. Its registered activity is electrical installation. That makes it a relatively young company, so ask the people you speak to about their individual experience.

The website says the company works as a NICEIC Approved Contractor and that its registration can be checked on the NICEIC website. It also says installations are tested and certified to BS 7671, the UK wiring standard. Please do check the register yourself.

The website lists opening hours of Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 2pm, with Sunday "Emergency Only". It does not describe an emergency service in more detail, so ask what that means before you rely on it. It shows a few Google reviews and links to the rest, but gives no overall score.

For a rewire, ask for a room-by-room scope. Check whether making good (plastering and decorating after cables are chased into walls) is included, and which certificates you will receive.

A good place to start if: You are rewiring or part-rewiring a Cardiff house and want to compare quotes from a business that lists rewiring first.

3. Williams Electrics

A long-running Cyncoed business with a strong Which? profile

Williams Electrics is based at Llyswen Road in Cyncoed. Its Which? Trusted Traders profile says it was established in 2009 and provides electrical services to domestic and industrial clients in Cardiff and the surrounding area.

The profile lists electrical installations and electrical testing. It also lists lighting work, including outdoor lighting and LED upgrades, and design and rewire of control panels. The profile does not name a scheme such as NICEIC, NAPIT or TrustMark, so ask the business which registration covers your job if that matters to you.

When we checked in October 2026, the Which? profile showed a rating of 5.0 from 95 reviews, with every sub-score at 5.0. It also says 100 per cent of customers recommend the business. That is one site's view, so it is worth reading several recent comments about jobs like yours.

Opening hours on the profile are Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm, with weekends closed. This looks like a business for planned work rather than urgent call-outs, but the profile does not say either way, so ask.

If your job involves lighting, such as new outdoor lighting or an LED upgrade, ask how the quote treats fittings, and who supplies them. If it involves testing, ask what report you will receive and how long it takes.

A good place to start if: You live in north Cardiff or nearby and want installation, testing or lighting work, and you like a long Which? review history to read.

4. Budd Electrical

Check before you book: this looks like an appliance shop

We included Budd Electrical because it is on the operator's list, but the evidence we found points to a shop, not an electrical contractor.

The Euronics store page for Budd Electrical gives an address of 118 to 120 Caerphilly Road, Cardiff, near the Birchgrove shopping area. It lists cooking appliances, fridges and freezers, washing machines, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners and TVs. It offers click and collect, delivery and recycling, and "installation", which on that page refers to fitting appliances. A FreeIndex listing describes it as a family-run kitchen and home appliance retailer and does not mention electrical contracting.

We found no page showing that Budd Electrical offers rewiring, EICRs, fault-finding or other work that needs a registered electrician. We also found no registration or review score for electrical contracting.

If you need an electrician, treat this entry with caution. If you want to buy a cooker, washing machine or other appliance and have it fitted, the shop may be useful. Ask exactly what the fitting service covers. A shop can connect a plug-in appliance, but fixed wiring, a new circuit or a hard-wired cooker may need a qualified electrician.

Opening hours on the store page are Monday to Saturday 8:30am to 5pm. If you plan to visit, check the hours with the shop first.

A good place to start if: You are buying a new appliance and want to ask the shop what installation it offers. For electrical repairs or testing, choose one of the other nine.

5. Electricall South Wales

For domestic, commercial and landlord jobs

Electricall South Wales is based in Cardiff. Its website says it offers electrical services to commercial and domestic properties, and it names landlords as a customer group.

The services listed are electrical repairs, wiring, fuse boards, electric car chargers, electrical testing and electrical installation. The site says it covers "in and around Cardiff and South Wales".

The site says it has emergency call-outs available 24/7. Its listed office hours are Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm. If you are thinking of calling at night, ring first and ask how quickly someone can attend your postcode, and whether an out-of-hours charge applies.

The website shows logos for NAPIT, TrustMark, EAL, CHAS and the OLEV EV installer scheme. It does not show registration numbers on the page we read. If any of these matter to you, ask for the number and check it with the scheme.

It does not show a star rating or review count. It shows three testimonials, including one from a letting agency, and links to Facebook, Google and Yell. A separate Poyst directory listing showed 5.0 from 5 Google reviews, which is a small sample.

For landlords, the key question is which report you need. Ask for an EICR, not a general safety check, and ask what the report will say about any urgent faults.

A good place to start if: You are a landlord or letting agent in Cardiff, or you want an EV charger, and you want to ask about emergency availability.

6. Gabe Electrical South Wales Ltd

For Cardiff homes and rental properties

Gabe Electrical describes itself as "Cardiff's Trusted Electrician Since 1999". Its website says the company became Gabe Electrical South Wales Ltd on 30 January 2026, so the limited company is new even if the person behind it says he has been working for years.

Its registered office is on Cowbridge Road East in Canton. The site says it is a service-area business and does not see customers at that address. It names Cardiff, including Canton and Roath, plus Penarth and Dinas Powys as the places it works.

Home services listed include EICRs, house rewiring, fuse board replacement, fault-finding, RCD tripping, bathroom electrics, electric showers, EV chargers, smoke alarms and ceiling fans. It also lists commercial maintenance, testing and emergency lighting.

The site says it is an NICEIC Approved Contractor and a Checkatrade member. We have not checked either. It gives no star rating, but links to Google, Yell and Facebook reviews.

The site has an emergency call-out form, and the header says "Contact us 24/7". The listed hours are 8:30am to 6:30pm daily. These do not quite match, so ask what the real out-of-hours service is before you rely on it.

A Poyst directory listing for GABE Electrical Ltd, at an address in Cardiff, showed 5.0 from 5 Google reviews, with comments about a rewire of a 1930s house and a repair in a rented flat. That is a small number, so read it as a sample rather than a score.

A good place to start if: You live in Canton, Roath, Penarth or Dinas Powys and need an EICR, fault-finding or a rewire.

7. APP Electrical Ltd

A family-run firm for homes, landlords and EV chargers

APP Electrical's Which? Trusted Traders profile describes it as a family-run electrical firm serving homeowners, businesses and landlords. The profile gives an address on North Road in Cardiff and says the company has traded since 2015.

Its services include rewiring, fuse boards, repairs, testing, outdoor wiring, electric showers, landlord safety certificates, emergency services and EV charging point installation. It covers Cardiff, Pontyclun, Caerphilly and the wider South Wales area.

The company's own website trades as APP Electrical and Fire Ltd and also lists EICRs, smart homes, underfloor heating, emergency lighting and commercial work. It shows NAPIT and TrustMark logos. It does not give registration numbers, so ask for them and check.

When we checked in October 2026, the Which? profile showed 5.0 from 7 reviews. That is a small number. The website claims "over 200" five star ratings on Google and Which? combined, but we could not confirm the split or the total.

The Which? profile lists hours of 7am to 7pm on weekdays and 8am to 12pm on Saturdays. The website lists emergencies as a service but does not promise 24 hour cover, so ask what an emergency visit involves and costs.

A good place to start if: You want a family-run firm in north Cardiff, or you need an EV charger, landlord certificate or rewire.

8. Electrical Services Cardiff Ltd

For electrical work with alarms and smart-home options

Electrical Services Cardiff Ltd is based on Mynachdy Road in Cardiff. Its Which? profile describes it as a family-run, independent electrical contractor with about 30 years of trading. It says its staff hold time-served qualifications, wear uniforms and carry ID passes.

The profile lists electrical work such as testing, installations, electric showers, repairs, fuse boards, landlord safety certificates, outdoor wiring and rewiring. It also lists alarm and security work, door entry and access control, CCTV, smart-home automation, LED and emergency lighting, and data cabling.

That wider range may help if your job spans more than one trade. A kitchen refit with lighting and a new alarm is an example. It may be less relevant if you only want a single socket fixed.

The Which? profile did not name an accreditation scheme such as NICEIC or NAPIT. One review mentions a NICEIC installation certificate, but we do not treat that as a registration for the business. If a scheme matters to you, ask which one covers your work.

When we checked in October 2026, the profile showed 5.0 from 33 reviews. It lists Monday to Saturday 7am to 6pm and says engineers are available 24 hours for emergency faults. As ever, ask about call-out charges first.

If your job involves alarms or smart devices, ask which systems the company installs and what you receive afterwards, such as handover training and instructions.

A good place to start if: You need electrical work alongside alarms, access control, lighting or smart-home controls.

9. CJS Electrical

For electrical and security work in north Cardiff

CJS Electrical is listed on Which? Trusted Traders as C J S Electrical (Wales) Ltd, at Mill Farm Industrial Estate in Lisvane. The profile says it has traded for over 35 years and offers expert electrical services for businesses and households in Wales.

Its listed work includes testing, installations, electric showers, emergency services, repairs, fuse boards, landlord safety certificates, outdoor wiring and rewiring. It also lists CCTV, alarms and access control, plus some security equipment supply and renewable energy work.

The profile does not name a scheme such as NICEIC or NAPIT. It does not state a service area either. Reviews mention customers in Cardiff, Bridgend, Caerphilly and Rhondda Cynon Taf, but that shows where customers were, not where the company promises to work. Ask whether it covers your postcode.

When we checked in October 2026, the profile showed 5.0 from 21 reviews. Read a few of the recent ones, especially any about work like yours. Because it also does security systems, check whether a quote for electrical work and one for alarms are priced separately.

A good place to start if: You live or work in the north of Cardiff and want electrical work together with CCTV, alarms or access control.

Trader profile: CJS Electrical on Which? Trusted Traders

10. Coles Electrics

A Newport business that works across South East Wales

Coles Electrics is the other entry that needs a note. Its Which? Trusted Traders profile gives an address in Newport, not Cardiff. The profile says it serves South East Wales, and reviews mention customers in Newport, Cardiff, Caerphilly and Torfaen. It is included because it is on the operator's list, and it is worth asking whether it can attend your part of Cardiff.

The profile lists consumer unit (fuse board) upgrades, rewiring of circuits, additions and alterations, repairs, and inspection and testing, including electrical condition reports. It also lists lighting, sockets, smart controls such as Hive and Nest, electric showers and landlord safety certificates. It offers free quotes.

It does not state how long the business has traded. It says its founder has more than 22 years of experience in electrical and mechanical engineering, which is about the person and not the company. It says the business is registered and fully insured, but names no scheme such as NICEIC or NAPIT. Ask which scheme covers your job and for the registration number.

When we checked in October 2026, the Which? profile showed 5.0 from 66 reviews. The profile describes a focus on domestic properties, with testing, condition reports and consumer unit upgrades. That makes it a sensible one to compare if you are a landlord or buying a house.

A good place to start if: You live on the eastern side of Cardiff or near Newport and want testing, a condition report or a consumer unit upgrade.

A Few Things to Check Before Hiring an Electrician in Cardiff

Once you have a couple of options, take a little time to compare them. It can save you money and stress.

Check their qualifications and registration

Some electrical work in Welsh homes falls under the building regulations. The Welsh Government's guidance on building regulations and electrics says you should use an installer registered with a competent person scheme, who can certify the work. Otherwise you may need to make a building regulations application to your local building control team.

Part P is the name usually used for the electrical safety section of the building regulations, and Welsh Government guidance refers to Approved Document P. A scheme logo on a website is a claim, so ask for a registration number and check it with the scheme.

Read reviews from other customers

Do not just look at the overall score. Several of the businesses above have only a handful of reviews. Read recent ones for punctuality, communication, tidiness, pricing and how problems were handled.

It also helps to find feedback about the same type of job you need. A business with strong feedback for rewiring may be a better choice for a rewire than one whose reviews are mostly about small repairs.

Ask for a written quote

For planned work, try to get two or three quotes. Check that each quote covers the same work and clearly explains labour, materials, testing, certification, VAT where it applies and any exclusions.

A very low quote is not always the best one. Make sure you understand what is included before you agree.

Confirm what paperwork you will receive

Depending on the job, you may receive an electrical installation certificate, a minor works certificate or an Electrical Installation Condition Report. Ask which applies to your work and whether it is included in the price.

Check they cover your postcode

Cardiff stretches from the Bay to Lisvane, and several firms here also work in Penarth, Caerphilly, Newport and Bridgend. Do not assume that a business that covers "South Wales" can reach you quickly. Ask about travel, evening or weekend work and any out-of-hours charge.

If you live in a flat, ask whether the work involves shared parts of the building. You may need permission from the landlord or managing agent first.

What Is an EICR, and Do You Need One in Wales?

EICR stands for Electrical Installation Condition Report. An electrician inspects and tests the fixed electrical installation in a property and records any damage, wear or defects. It is a report on condition, not a repair.

It can be useful if you are buying an older house, or if you have noticed warm sockets, flickering lights or a fuse board that trips.

For landlords, the rules in Wales are not the same as in England. England uses its own electrical safety regulations. In Wales, electrical safety is part of fitness for human habitation under the Renting Homes (Wales) Act 2016. The Welsh Government's guidance says a landlord must make sure the electrical installation is inspected and tested at least every 5 years, or sooner if the electrician recommends it. It also says a copy of the EICR must be made available to the contract-holder (the Welsh term for a tenant) within 14 days.

You can read the official Welsh Government guidance on fitness for human habitation for more detail. Rules and dates can change, so check the latest version for your tenancy.

If you let a property in Cardiff, you may also have other duties, such as registration and licensing with Rent Smart Wales. If you let to students in a shared house, ask Cardiff Council whether a licence applies.

When you arrange an EICR, ask whether the quoted price includes the report, what happens if the inspection finds problems and whether remedial work will be quoted separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an electrician cost in Cardiff?

It depends on the job. Replacing a socket, finding a fault, doing an EICR and rewiring a house are very different amounts of work.

Time, materials, access to the installation and whether you need an urgent visit all affect the price. One business in this guide, MJP Electrical, publishes its own rates, but they were set by the business and may change.

The simplest approach is to describe the job clearly and ask for a written quote. When you compare prices, make sure each quote covers the same work.

How do I find an emergency electrician in Cardiff?

Start by checking who covers your postcode and advertises emergency visits. In this guide, Electricall South Wales and Electrical Services Cardiff Ltd say they offer emergency cover, and MJP Electrical lists emergency call-outs. Gabe Electrical has an emergency call-out form, but check what its out-of-hours service means.

Call to confirm availability, arrival time and charges before booking.

If you see sparks, smoke, a burning smell or exposed live wires, keep away from the affected area and do not try to fix it yourself. If you can do so safely, switch off the supply at the consumer unit without touching damaged equipment. If there is immediate danger, call the emergency services.

Do landlords in Cardiff need an EICR?

Landlords in Wales have to make sure the electrical installation is inspected and tested at least every 5 years, as part of fitness for human habitation. The Welsh Government says the contract-holder must be given a copy of the report within 14 days.

Check the latest guidance for your tenancy, because rules and dates can differ for older contracts.

Should I hire a local sole trader or a larger company?

That depends on the job. A smaller local firm may be a practical choice for repairs, a rewire or an EICR on a house. A larger firm may suit bigger projects or work that spans several trades.

Whichever you choose, check qualifications, registration, insurance, written pricing and recent customer feedback.

What should I ask before booking?

Ask whether the business covers your postcode, is qualified for the work, will give a written quote and will issue the right paperwork afterwards.

It is also sensible to ask about the start date, payment terms, extra charges and any guarantee. A good electrician should be able to explain the work in plain language.

Final Thoughts

Finding an electrician in Cardiff does not need to be hard. Start by working out what you need: an urgent repair, an inspection, a rewire or an upgrade.

Then narrow the list to businesses that cover your area and say they do that kind of work. Read recent reviews, check any registration they claim and compare written quotes.

If you are planning a rewire, Cardiff Electrical Home Rewire Ltd and Williams Electrics are worth a look. For landlord work, Electricall South Wales, Gabe Electrical South Wales Ltd and APP Electrical Ltd list landlord services. If your job also involves alarms or CCTV, Electrical Services Cardiff Ltd and CJS Electrical list those too. Remember that Coles Electrics is based in Newport, MJP Electrical is based in Bristol, and Budd Electrical looks like an appliance shop.

There is no need to choose the first electrician you find. A few simple checks can help you find someone who suits your property, your budget and the work you need done.

At LocalListed, our aim is to help you find local services and make more informed decisions. We hope this guide gives you a useful starting point.

Editorial note: This guide uses publicly available business information and trader profiles reviewed in October 2026. LocalListed has not independently tested these businesses. Service areas, reviews, registration details and availability can change, so confirm them directly with the company before booking.
