Looking for an Electrician in Birmingham?

Finding an electrician is rarely a calm job. A socket stops working, the fuse board trips every evening, or you buy a house and wonder what is behind the walls. You want someone sensible, and you want to know who to call.

Birmingham has a lot of homes that have seen several decades of changes. Many are Victorian and Edwardian terraces, and many are 1930s semis. Others are newer homes on the edge of the city. Older homes can have older wiring, and wiring that has been added to over the years. A small repair is very different from changing a consumer unit or rewiring a whole house, so it helps to find an electrician who has done your kind of job before.

To help you start, we have put together a guide to 10 electricians in Birmingham worth comparing. We looked at each company's own website, trader directory profiles and, for some, the Companies House register.

Please read this as a starting point. It is not an official ranking, and the order does not mean one company is better than another. We have not tested any of these businesses. Some are easy to check online. Some are not, and we say so where that is the case.

Birmingham is big, and the area around it is bigger. Ask about postcode coverage and travel charges when you first get in touch. If you are a landlord, say so straight away, so the electrician knows whether you need an inspection report or repair work.

Our List of 10 Electricians in Birmingham

Here is a quick look at the ten businesses in this guide. Two of them are based outside Birmingham, and we say where.

Now let's look at each company and the kind of job you might contact it about.

1. Your Property Testing

A company to consider if you need an EICR or other property safety tests

If you are a landlord, or you are buying or selling a home, you may want testing rather than a repair. Some companies focus on that, and Your Property Testing is one.

Its website lists EICRs (electrical safety reports), PAT testing, gas safety certificates, energy performance certificates, and electrical remedial work. It says it provides services across the West Midlands region. Its Trustpilot profile gives an address in Bearwood, Birmingham, and describes the firm as a Midlands-based electrical, energy and gas testing company.

The website says its engineers are accredited by recognised bodies, and names NAPIT, Gas Safe Register and Elmhurst. On Trustpilot the company says it is a TrustMark member. We did not check any of these against the official registers, so ask for the details of the person who will visit and confirm them yourself.

The site also advertises seven day a week bookings and says an EICR will be sent within 24 hours. That is a good question to put to them directly if you are on a tight timeline, for example before a tenancy starts.

On Trustpilot the company showed a TrustScore of 4.3 from 93 reviews when we checked in October 2026. Trustpilot noted that the company had not recently invited customers to leave reviews, so the score may not reflect current customers. Parts of the company's website still contained placeholder text when we visited, so you may want to get anything important in writing.

A good place to start if: You are a landlord or buyer who wants an electrical inspection, perhaps alongside a gas or energy certificate.

2. Electracert Electrical Services

For repairs and rewiring in Birmingham and Solihull

Some people prefer to deal with one electrician rather than a large company. Electracert Electrical Services looks like that kind of business. Its website is written in the first person, and the electrician describes having over 15 years of hands-on experience.

The site lists residential electrical repairs, installations, home rewiring, safety inspections and emergency services, and says it works in Birmingham and Solihull. It shows a NAPIT logo with the words "Approved Contractor" and describes the electrician as certified and fully insured. We could not check NAPIT's register, so it is worth asking for the registration number.

On emergencies, the site says the electrician is available to address urgent issues as quickly as possible. It does not claim a 24 hour service, and it does not give a response time. Ask what to expect before you rely on it.

No street address is shown on the site. The business is listed on the trader directory Rated Traders, which showed a 5.0 score from 105 reviews when we checked in October 2026. Rated Traders marks the listing as "not verified", so treat the score as a pointer, not proof.

A good place to start if: You want a small local business for a repair, a rewire or a safety inspection in Birmingham or Solihull.

Website: electracert.co.uk

3. Agile Electrics

Worth a closer look, but check its status before you pay anything

Agile Electrics advertises a lot. Its website lists domestic, commercial and industrial work, EICR and PAT testing, emergency lighting, fire alarms, EV charging, solar panels and CCTV. It gives an address at Gibb Street in Digbeth, Birmingham, and says it serves the whole of the West Midlands.

The site says "NICEIC Approved", "30+ years of experience", "24 hour services" and "free call out". We did not check these claims against any register. The 30 years may refer to the people rather than the company.

There is also something you should know before you contact them. The footer of the website gives a registered company number that begins 16027. Companies House shows a company called Agile Electrics Ltd with the number 16027575. It was incorporated on 18 October 2024. When we looked in October 2026, the register listed it as in liquidation, with accounts shown as overdue. We could not tell whether this is the business now trading from the Digbeth address, or whether it is still taking work.

On Trustpilot it showed a TrustScore of 4.1 from 11 reviews.

This does not mean anything is wrong. But it is a good reason to ring first, ask for the company name and number of whoever will do the job, and avoid paying any deposit until you have checked.

A good place to start if: You are comparing options for a larger job and are happy to check the company's current status first.

Website: agileelectrics.com

4. The Electrical Folks

For rewires, fuse boards and inspections across the city

The Electrical Folks gives an address on Percy Road, Birmingham (B11), and says it has been trading since 1993.

Its website lists EICR testing, rewiring, fuse box replacement, electrical inspections, repairs, EV charger installation and commercial work. It names areas it covers, including Edgbaston, Moseley, Harborne, Selly Oak, Sutton Coldfield and Kings Heath, and says it also covers the wider West Midlands, including Solihull, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Dudley and Coventry.

On accreditation, the site says it is an NICEIC Approved Contractor, registered with City and Guilds, and "CheckATrade approved". We did not check the NICEIC register or find the Checkatrade profile, so ask for proof if that matters for your job.

It does not claim 24/7 cover. It says it responds to emergency electrical situations promptly, and that it responds to new enquiries within 24 hours. Ask what "promptly" means for your postcode.

Rated Traders lists the business with a 5.0 score from 93 reviews. Again, that listing is marked as not verified.

A good place to start if: You live in a Victorian or Edwardian house and want to talk about a rewire, a fuse box change or an inspection.

Website: electricalfolks.co.uk

5. City Electrical Services (Midlands)

For homes and businesses that need an electrician who also fits EV chargers

City Electrical Services (Midlands) gives an address on Kingswood Road in Moseley (B13), and says it works in Birmingham and the West Midlands.

Its website lists full and partial rewires, fuse board and consumer unit upgrades, EICRs and landlord certificates, sockets and switches, fault finding, lighting, EV charger installation, and security and CCTV. It says it does both domestic and commercial work.

The site says it is NAPIT registered, 18th Edition qualified, and fully insured. We could not find the company on an independent register through our searches, so please ask for its NAPIT details and check them. The site says "Est. 2009" and also "20+ years on the tools". Those two figures do not match, so it is worth asking how long the business has traded.

The emergency wording is mixed. The site mentions "24/7 emergency call-outs" in one place and "emergency call-outs 7 days" in another. Ask how an out of hours job would work, and whether a call-out fee applies.

Rated Traders lists the business with a 5.0 score from 75 reviews, and marks it as not verified.

A good place to start if: You want a general electrician for a rewire or a landlord certificate, and may want an EV charger fitted.

Website: cityelectricalservices.uk

6. Amperous Electrical & Security

A listing to check if you want electrical and security work together

Amperous Electrical & Security is the first of two businesses in this guide where we found only a directory listing. Its own website did not load when we tried it, so we cannot tell you what it says.

The trader directory Rated Traders lists it as providing electrical and security services to customers across Birmingham. The listing says it covers residential and commercial electrical work and security system installation, and gives a base on Springmeadow Road. It shows a 5.0 score from 74 reviews, which the listing says are Google reviews. Rated Traders marks it as not verified, and no accreditations are listed.

That is all we can honestly say. If the mix of electrical and security work appeals, call and ask the basic questions. Which scheme is the electrician registered with? Is there insurance? Can one quote cover both the electrical and the security parts? Which certificates will you get at the end?

A good place to start if: You want one business to quote for electrical work and a security system, and you are happy to check the details yourself.

7. B&B Electrical Ltd

A listing to check for domestic and commercial electrical work

B&B Electrical Ltd is the second business where we found only a directory entry. When we tried the website address given on that listing, it did not lead to a working business site, so we do not link to it.

Rated Traders lists the business as providing electrical services across Birmingham from a base in the B32 postcode area. It lists domestic and commercial installations, repairs and maintenance, and says its electricians are qualified. It shows a 4.9 score from 71 reviews, with 70 five star and one one star. The listing is marked as not verified, and no accreditations are listed.

We could not confirm the company on Companies House, and we found no accreditations. That does not mean it is not a good business. It means you should do the checking. Ask for the company name and number, the electrician's registration scheme, proof of insurance, and a written quote.

A good place to start if: You live in South West Birmingham, and you are willing to check the credentials carefully before booking.

Trader profile: B&B Electrical Ltd on Rated Traders

8. Intolec Limited

A Warwickshire company, so check it covers you

The operator's list includes Intolec Limited under Birmingham. Its website address, however, is for Leamington Spa, and it does not appear to work in Birmingham.

The website says the company serves Leamington Spa, Coventry, Stratford-upon-Avon and Southam, and names Warwick, Kenilworth and surrounding Warwickshire towns. Birmingham is not mentioned. Its office is at Warwick Business Centre in Warwick. Companies House lists Intolec Limited as active, incorporated on 4 October 2021, at the same Warwick address.

The services listed are wide. They include installations and rewiring, consumer unit upgrades, EV chargers, solar panels and battery storage, fault finding, EICRs and landlord certificates. The site says the company is NAPIT registered, an MCS certified solar installer, and an OZEV approved EV charger installer. It also says "25+ years experience". The company itself was incorporated in 2021, so that figure probably refers to the team's experience.

Its Which? Trusted Traders profile describes it as a Warwickshire based electrical company and showed a 5.0 rating from 19 reviews when we checked in October 2026. Reviewers there mention Warwickshire, Kenilworth, and some customers in the West Midlands. Whether it would travel to your Birmingham address is something only the company can tell you.

If you live in the south east of the Birmingham area, near Solihull or Coventry, it may be worth a call. If you live elsewhere in the city, you will probably find a closer option.

A good place to start if: You are in or near Warwickshire and want solar, battery storage or an EV charger.

9. Allsafe Electrical Services Ltd

For electrical work in East and South East Birmingham

If you live in the east or south east of Birmingham, it helps to find an electrician based nearby. Allsafe Electrical Services Ltd is based on Brays Road in Sheldon (B26).

Companies House lists Allsafe Electrical Services Limited as active, incorporated on 9 January 2008, with its registered office at the same Brays Road address.

The website names the areas it covers, including Solihull, Shirley, Tyseley, Acocks Green, Yardley, Marston Green, Stechford, Knowle, Chelmsley Wood and Kings Heath. Its services include lighting, sockets and switches, fuse boxes, outdoor wiring, EICRs for rental properties, smoke detectors, EV charging and security lighting.

The site describes the firm as a Which? Trusted Trader, TrustMark approved and an NICEIC Approved Contractor. It says the business has been in the electrical industry for over 40 years. The Which? profile says the firm was set up in 2008 and that the founder has 43 years of experience, which fits with the Companies House date. We did not check the NICEIC or TrustMark registers.

The site gives opening hours as "open 24/7" and says its emergency electricians respond quickly. As always, call and ask how quickly someone can reach your postcode.

Its Which? Trusted Traders profile showed a 5.0 rating from 6 reviews when we checked in October 2026. That is a small number, so the score tells you less than a longer review history would.

A good place to start if: You live in East or South East Birmingham or Solihull and want an electrician for repairs, an EICR or lighting.

10. LJT Electrical Contractors

A Dudley business, so confirm it travels to you

The operator's list places LJT Electrical Contractors in Birmingham. Its own website, however, is about Dudley. It says the office is in the Lower Gornal area of Dudley and that it covers Dudley and the wider West Midlands. Dudley is a separate local authority from Birmingham, in the Black Country. If you live in the west of Birmingham, it might not be far. If you live in the north or east, it is further.

The website lists electrical installations, CCTV, intruder alarms, door, gate entry and intercom systems, air conditioning, lighting, sockets and switches, and fire alarms. It says the team is City and Guilds qualified, the firm is an NICEIC member and "an approved contractor", and all work is covered by public liability insurance. It says it has helped customers for more than 14 years, and offers round the clock services.

We could not find an independent record to confirm the business name, company details or NICEIC status, so please ask for its registration details. Rated Traders lists the business under Birmingham, and the figure it shows for reviews is not consistent: 42 in the table and 31 in its own description. We have not used either number.

A good place to start if: You live in the west of Birmingham or the Black Country, and want electrical work together with CCTV, alarms or intercom systems.

A Few Things to Check Before Hiring an Electrician in Birmingham

Once you have two or three companies that look suitable, take a little time to compare them. It can save you money and stress.

Check their qualifications and registration

For some electrical work, the electrician needs to be registered with a scheme that lets them certify their own work to the building regulations. In England, these are called competent person schemes. The GOV.UK guidance on competent person schemes explains how they work. It says a registered installer can certify that their work meets the standards, and should give you a certificate within 8 weeks of finishing.

Several businesses in this guide say they are registered with NICEIC or NAPIT. Those are the names of schemes, and a claim on a website is not the same as being on the register. Both schemes let you search for a contractor on their own websites. Do that before you pay a deposit.

Check the company is real, and still trading

This sounds basic, but it matters. You can search for any limited company for free on the Companies House website. Look at the company name, the address and whether it is active. The guide above shows why: one business uses a company number that the register shows as in liquidation. Ask any electrician for their company name and number.

Read reviews from other customers

Do not just look at the score. Read some recent reviews to see what customers say about punctuality, communication, price and the quality of the finished work.

Be careful with small numbers. A 5.0 score from six reviews tells you less than a 4.8 from several hundred. Also note which site the review is on. Some directories do not check who wrote a review.

Ask for a written quote

For planned work, try to get two or three quotes. Check that each quote covers the same job and clearly lists labour, materials, testing, certificates and any other charges.

A very cheap quote is not always the best one. Make sure you understand what is included.

Confirm what paperwork you will receive

Depending on the job, you may need an electrical installation certificate, a minor works certificate or an Electrical Installation Condition Report. Ask which one applies, and whether it is in the price.

Check they cover your area

Birmingham is a large city, and its postcodes run from the city centre out to suburbs such as Sutton Coldfield, Moseley and Sheldon. A firm that works in Moseley may not want to travel to Erdington, and some of the businesses here also cover Solihull, Dudley or Warwickshire. Ask when they can visit, and whether evening, weekend or emergency visits cost extra.

What Is an EICR, and Do You Need One?

You may see the term EICR when looking for an electrician. It stands for Electrical Installation Condition Report.

An EICR is produced after an electrician inspects and tests the fixed wiring in a property. It can highlight damage, wear and anything that does not meet current standards, and it grades problems so you know what needs attention first.

An EICR can be especially useful in Birmingham if you own an older house. Wiring in a Victorian terrace or a 1930s semi may have been altered several times, sometimes by different people. A report can show what is safe and what needs work before you start a renovation or buy.

For landlords in England, the rule is clear. The government's electrical safety guidance for the private and social rented sectors says landlords must have the electrics in their rented properties checked at least every 5 years by a properly qualified person. They must also give tenants proof that the checks have been done. The Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector (England) Regulations 2020 set out the detail.

Birmingham City Council also has pages for private landlords. If you rent out a home, check whether you need a licence, for example for a shared house, and whether your licence has conditions about electrical safety. We could not confirm the details for every area, so check with the council.

If you arrange an EICR, ask whether the quoted price includes the written report, and what happens if the inspection finds problems. Any repair work is often a separate quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an electrician cost in Birmingham?

It depends on the job. Replacing a socket, finding a fault, doing an EICR and rewiring a whole house are very different amounts of work. The time needed, materials, access to the wiring and whether you need an urgent visit can all change the price.

We have not listed prices because we cannot confirm any. Explain the job clearly and ask for a written quote. When you compare prices, make sure each electrician is quoting for the same work.

How do I find an emergency electrician in Birmingham?

Start by looking for companies that cover your postcode and advertise emergency visits. In this guide, Electracert, The Electrical Folks, City Electrical Services (Midlands), Allsafe and LJT all say they offer some form of emergency or urgent service, and Agile Electrics advertises a 24 hour service. We have not tested any of these claims, and Agile's status should be checked first, as explained above.

Call to confirm availability, arrival time and charges before booking. If you see sparks, smoke, a burning smell or bare live wires, keep clear of the area and do not try to repair it yourself. If there is immediate danger, call the emergency services.

Do landlords in Birmingham need an EICR?

Yes, if the rules for England apply to your tenancy. Landlords covered by the regulations must have the electrical installation inspected and tested at least every 5 years by a properly qualified person, and must give tenants proof it has been done. Check the latest government guidance for the exact rules for your property, and check with Birmingham City Council about any licence you may need.

Can an electrician help with an older house?

Yes. Explain the age of the house, and describe any faults that keep coming back, such as a tripping fuse board or lights that flicker. In an older home, an inspection is often the best first step, because it can show what is behind the problem before anyone suggests a repair or a rewire.

Should I use someone based in Birmingham or nearby?

Usually someone close by is easier. They can visit quickly, and they are more likely to return if something needs fixing. Two of the businesses in this guide, Intolec and LJT, are based outside the city, in Warwick and Dudley. That does not rule them out, but you should check they will travel to you, and whether they charge for it.

What should I ask before booking?

Ask whether the electrician covers your postcode, is registered for the work, can give a written quote and will issue the right paperwork afterwards. Ask for the company name and number, proof of insurance, the expected start date and any charges beyond the quote. Ask whether any work comes with a guarantee.

A good electrician should be able to explain the plan in words you understand.

Final Thoughts

Finding an electrician in Birmingham does not have to be hard. Start by working out what you need. It might be an urgent repair, an EICR for a rented home, or a larger project on an older house.

Then narrow your list to businesses that cover your area and have done similar work. Check their company details and registration, read recent reviews, and compare written quotes.

If you want an inspection or a landlord certificate, Your Property Testing, The Electrical Folks and Allsafe all list EICRs. For a rewire, The Electrical Folks and City Electrical Services (Midlands) list it. If you are near Solihull and want something local, Electracert and Allsafe both name it. If you want solar or an EV charger and live toward Warwickshire, Intolec is worth a call. For Amperous and B&B, which we could only find on a directory, do your own checks before you book.

There is no need to pick the first electrician you find. A few simple checks can help you find someone who suits your home, your budget and the work you need done.

At LocalListed, our aim is to help you find local services and make more informed choices. We hope this guide is a useful starting point for finding an electrician in Birmingham.

Editorial note: This guide uses publicly available business information, trader profiles and company records reviewed in October 2026. LocalListed has not independently tested these businesses, and has not checked their registrations against the NICEIC, NAPIT or TrustMark registers. Ratings, review counts, service areas, registration details and availability can change, so confirm them directly with the company before booking.
